Oaxaca city is one of the most culturally and historically interesting cities in the Republic of Mexico. Capital of the southern state of Oaxaca, our city's streets are laid out in an easy-to-navigate north-south and east-west grid. Important historical figures such as Benito Juárez, Porfirio Díaz, and José Vasconcelos were born and lived here.
Oaxaca boasts magnificent architecture in the designs of its many beautiful churches -The Cathedral, La Defensa, La Soledad, Jalatlaco, San Felipe Nery and La Compañia. The recent restoration of the church and convent of Santo Domingo merits special attention. The church and former convent are beautiful examples of Dominican and colonial architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries. The former convent has been a museum since 1972 and houses centuries of art wich reveal the secrets of Oaxaca. Among these are treasures excavated from Tomb 7 of the famous ruins of Monte Albán.
Oaxaca City is the place where the state's indigenous cultures converge. Our customs, language, cuisine, clothing and crafts spring from this great diversity and make our city uniquely interesting. |
