Bani Stui Gulal
Date: July
This is a traditional folklore event presented with different choreographies. These dances tell stories related to the origins and transformation of regional holidays such as "Guelaguetza or "Lunes del Cerro". The show, called "Bani Stui Gulal" in Zapoteco, is about history repeating itself. Since 1960, this event is held on the Sunday preceding the "Guelaguetza" festivities, which are held the next day. The stage is set on Dance Square, next to the Basilica de la Soledad. Dances start off with the protrayal of a Pre-Hispanic holiday known as "Hueytecuhilhuitl" (Great Feast of the Lords), brought here by the Aztecs. In ancient times a damsel would be offered in sacrifice to the Goddess of Corn, "Centeotl". Later, during colonial times, this holiday merged with a Catholic holiday, "Virgen del Carmen". The holiday has now been modernised. There is a pageant to crown a girl to represent the "Goddess of Corn", chosen among contestants from every region in the State. The lucky winner is the hostess of "Fiesta de la Guelaguetza".
