    Recomentación

I came to Oaxaca armed only with a pocket-size Spanish-English dictionary and the ever-so-unrealistic intention of progressing from speaking no Spanish at all to conversing so fluently that I would be mistaken for a local. And all in 4 weeks, naturally.
Now that these four weeks have lapsed and I am still talking in present tense regardless of whether I am referring to yesterday, today or next year, I can ask myself what I have learn. And the answer is simple: everything that Spanish course back home doesn't teach.
It truly is the people that leave the greatest impression when studying in another country. I was privileged to work alongside a Mexican doctor during my visit (I am a medical student) in a clinic catering for people with very little money and very difficult lives. In spite of my limited Spanish, I was always a treated with a respect unfathomable in my country, by both doctors an patients alike. The undeserving gratitude of each and every patient has provided me with a inspiration not found elsewere.
If you reading this, you are probably considering undertaking a similar adventure. My only advise to you is stop thinking and enroll in a Spanish course, stating with a Mexican family, and ask the directors of Oaxaca International to introduce you to one of ther local doctors for an experience you will always cherish.
After all, where else will doctors be thanked by presents of chorizos and grateful kisses of the cheek!!.
